Enhancement of Impurity Removal from Polymer Fibers
John E. Palamara

A ternary solvent-solvent-polymer system has been modeled to examine the effect of a second solvent on the removal of a volatile impurity in a polymer fiber. The introduction of a second, faster diffusing solvent increases the free-volume of the system and thus increases the diffusion rate of the volatile impurity. An implicit finite difference method was used to simultaneously solve the diffusion equation for each solvent. The effects of various process conditions and diffusion properties of the second solvent on the removal of the impurity are analyzed. It is found that a reduction in drying time of an order of magnitude can be attained by the introduction of a second solvent to enhance drying.
