Free Volume Interpretation of Antiplasticization
J. Román Galdámez and Justin L. Becker

Antiplasticization behavior of water in rubber and elastomers has been reported in the literature and usually attributed to clustering of solvent molecules. This work reviews some of the most conventional theories used to explain this behavior and offers a new interpretation of this phenomenon based on the free volume theory. This will be used to predict which systems are susceptible to undergo antiplasticization. Finally, some experimental data are shown to validate this theory.
