Mechanism of Bubble Formation in the Drying of Polymer Films
Reza Pourdarvish

A new analysis of the mechanism which leads to bubble formation in the drying of polymer solutions indicates that inherent thermodynamic potentials promote bubble formation by air in all polymer-solvent systems. The supersaturation necessary for bubble formation is predicted only when the cross terms in multicomponent diffusion are taken into account. Implications of this study extend to numerous other polymer processing activities where coupling of diffusion between species may be important.
